Buddha Belly (Jatropha podagrica)

Flourishing in bright, warm environments, Jatropha podagrica produces a striking swollen basal stem, or caudex, topped with large architectural leaves and vibrant coral-red flower clusters. The caudex stores water, helping the plant tolerate periods of drought. Jatropha naturally enters dormancy and may drop its leaves during cooler months, so plants ordered in winter can arrive as a bare caudex before resuming growth in warmth.

Light: Requires full sun to bright, filtered light to maintain strong growth and encourage prolific flowering.

Water: Drought tolerant. Allow the soil to dry thoroughly between waterings, particularly during winter dormancy.

Soil: A highly porous, well-draining mix that prevents excess moisture retention and protects the fleshy caudex from rot.
